Two rabbits sat on top of a hill. The long dark grass waved around them.
"What shall we do, sir?" Asked a burly white rabbit. He was standing on his two forelegs next to a small brown rabbit crouching in the grass.
"I want extra patrols. I also want to lead an attack on them tomorrow. they will pay for their intrusion." The white rabbit nodded, and slipped away. The brown rabbit remained, looking out at the hills.
"They will pay dearly."
He rose and left, as the rain started to fall.
------------------
"WE'RE BEING ATTACKED! TO THE BURROWS! OWSLA TO THEIR POSITIONS!" Cried a frantic looking brown rabbit. Out of the crowd of rabbits streaming to their holes, tough, strong, huge looking rabbits came running the opposite direction. Their teeth bared, they looked formidable. So did the others. there was no pause when the two forces of owsla met. They smashed into each other, teeth bared, claws out. They fought long and hard, but eventually, both forces tired, and the attacking force retreated. A white rabbit lead the retreating attacker force. After a while, they had obviously hit their border, because they slowed, and some stopped, licking their wounds. The white rabbit started to speak. His voice cut through the slow, humid night air and the tired rabbits.
"We have shown Thyalan what happens when they kill from our warren!" These words were greeted with hoarse cheers and general approval.
"We will stay here for a few hours. Tend to your wounds, and rest." He paused.
"Reinforcements will be coming later to warn us about elil and help us get there. You fought well." A few mumbles ripped through the crowd, and then chatter broke out over the weary rabbits. A black and white rabbit walked slowly up beside the white rabbit.
"Captain. What shall we do with the dead? They were left at the battle field."
The captain of owsla paused, considering his next words carefully.
"We will leave them there. There is nothing that can be done. We have already lost enough lives." The black and white rabbit hesitated, and then asked:
"But, we should at least try? These were rabbits with lives. Mates. Loyalty. Can nothing be done?" He finished, cowering slightly as the white rabbit turned.
"I heard you were and outsider? Welcome to shadow hills. Where the ground is fed with blood. Nothing can be done for the dead. This life on the hills is a solitary silflay, don't you know that yet?"
The white rabbit walked away, heading for some of the wounded. the black and white rabbit stared after him, his mind whirring.
Welcome to the hills. I hope you're ready.
