"Mother?"
"Mmmm...?"
"What are we?"
"We are shadows, love. Shadows of what we were. Shadows of what we can be. Shadows of what we want to be.

A small island lay of the coast of New Zealand. It was small, unimportant. The world didn't pay much attention to it. They were all fixated on America, on England, all those countries. they were busy looking the other way.
The inhabitants of the island were quite normal. Ordinary. Nothing about them would attract any attention.
The tsunami was utterly unpredicted.
There was no warning. None absolutely. No tides going backwards... Nothing. There was a storm (which was not unusual). One minute it was just rain.. and then... a shadow loomed over the house, and it crushed you. it was the biggest tsunami ever in the world. It swamped the whole island. bodies littered the ground. And black things were slowly rising out of them. They were struggling, as if stuck to their bodies. heavy, useless, but precious. Because half of life clung to them, and would not be coaxed off them. Half of the lives died with their bodies. This happened to only the ex-humans. every bird, horse, dog, lay still. All the shadows picked themselves up, and looked at each other. A voice whispered in their ear. It smelt of the sea, and it sounded of gently breaking waves and seagulls.
'You have a task...'
Silence.
They managed to live half lives peacefully for a while. But, humans, well, half are kind and peace loving, war haters.
That leaves the other half.
The screams of war, and the ripping, tearing filled the air.
A tall shadow walked among the battle.
Everyone fell silent. Her eyes, black as pitch, roamed the grounds. all the other shadows remained still, terrified of this lone shadow.
"We have a task." She said, in a cool, clear voice. Her eyes managed to bore into every fighting shadow at once. You could hear the beach 50 miles away.
"And yet, you waste your time fighting." Ice splinters forced their way into every shadow. Cold terror sat in the bottom of their stomachs. Her cold eyes swept across the battle field. The clouds were fit brimming with rain held still in fear.
"I will leave this island, with the people who wish to leave."
Silence. Shadows had been in the middle of fighting. They hadn't dared to move. They were paying rapt attention. Even the wind was. Not a breeze was blowing.
A few seconds ago, it had been strong enough to uproot a tree.
"The fools who wish to stay, may stay." She turned to her followers
"I will call you back to the island when it is time." A cocky, stupid shadow stirred. He opened his mouth to speak, and words tumbled out.
"Who are you, anyway?" He drawled, a leering expression. What was going on in his minuscule brain, I have no idea.
Black eyes trained themselves on the incompetent fool. They were as cold as dry ice.
"I am Nobody."
She succeded in terrifying the once-cocky shadow into silence. he cowered.
Nobody faded into the air.
A drop of rain fell.
